No solo has logrado elogios comerciales sino tambien has trabajado con las que me imagino han sido tus heroes desde JLo y Christina Aguilera. Has hecho pijamadas con Christina Aguilera.

[risa] Si.

Interview by Ivan Guzman - July 08, 2017

Janelle has also been breaking barriers by doing a lot of acting lately.

Exactly! She’s going the complete opposite direction, and she also has her label and other ventures. So she brought me to Atlanta, and over the past few months we’ve been going in just really trying to finish up this album. Same with Christina Aguilera. She kind of met me right in the middle ground of, “I understand you want to be creative, but I also understand your label—they want a hit.” So finding that middle ground for my project was actually a lot less complicated than I thought it was going to be. People are always like, “How do you have thirteen songs that aren’t yours coming out over the rest of the year and still have twelve songs coming out on your own project?” It’s literally just about staying focused and going back to knowing who I am at a very young age.

Similar to Monae, Parx swooped in to help discover the sound for what would become Christina Aguilera’s first album in six years, Liberation. “I knew what I wanted to hear from her as a fan,” she explains. “She also very good at saying exactly what she wanted, and would talk about everything, from where she’s at in love to her experience on The Voice.”

Working out of Aguilera’s house, the pop superstar would come into her home studio after putting her kids to bed. During off time, Parx and Aguilera fostered a friendship which saw them watching Netflix and playing baseball with her kids in the yard during downtime. “The creative process was very give and take, and I really enjoyed it a lot,” says Parx. “ I was like, ‘This is very interesting.’ I love how she’s doing something new and unique without abandoning what makes her Christina Aguilera.”

Aguilera compared Parx to a little sister, one who introduced her to “Black Mirror” and Instagram stories, while also gamely battling Aguilera’s children with Nerf guns. “She just has this natural personable quality that makes you feel at ease,” Aguilera said. “You want to be in a room with her.”

As a former child performer herself, Aguilera said she was thrilled with the recognition now heading Parx’s way after her work with Grande. “I can hear Tayla in those songs, for sure,” Aguilera said, praising Parx’s ability to collaborate with “another young artist and really take them to that next place in their career, where you’re like: ‘Oh, wait, who is this again? Ariana Grande!?’”

Another album you worked on and got a Grammy nomination last year for was Christina Aguilera's Liberation. What was that like to be in the studio with such an icon?

One of my first memories of singing, I was singing one of her songs. It was incredible, I just had to tell her this. Like, Yo, I’m sitting next to an icon, I’m at her house, I’m playing nerf gun wars with her son, I’m playing baseball with her in the backyard. We were really getting to know each other and we became friends over this two-year album cycle doing this album. She really wanted to know, what do people want from me in this day and age? And I’m like, “They want you to be real.” It’s hard for artists I think, if they came out before a certain year. Perfection was the thing that people loved. Now, that's completely done for. People want real. I had to be the person that was going to tell her things that she doesn’t want to hear all the time.
