23. "Reflection" (Mulan, 1998)

Set the Scene: After failing to perform as a perfect lady for a matchmaker, Mulan catches her reflection in a pond, leaving her to question who she is and wants to be – and encouraging her to take action (impersonating a man and entering the draft for her father) so that the two align.

Why It Works: Largely thanks to Christina Aguilera’s breakthrough rendition of the hit, “Reflection” has become an anthem for young people – especially women – who are working towards being unapologetically themselves.

Magic Moment: When she belts, “When will my reflection show who I am inside?” only to repeat the phrase once more, and much softer, as if realizing only she can answer the question. — L.H.
